5 Facts About Donald Duck You Never Knew

I recently visited Chiang Mai, Thailand on a world travel photography trip and was on an excursion and saw an old Donald Duck statue. I was so intrigued because, as an American, we know these characters well, but knowing that these characters have special places in people’s hearts lead me to want to research this further.

Donald Duck was created in 1934, which means he is over 80 years old! His first “role” was in The Wise Little Hen, but then appeared along side Mickey Mouse in Orphan's Benefit. Donald Duck has garnered global recognition for many reasons including:

  • In Finland, when voters protest a vote they will mark their ballots with “Donald Duck”
  • Disney won an Oscar in 1943 for an animated short called Der Feuhrer's Face, which featured Donald Duck and was an anti-Nazi cartoon.
  • According to the Dutch, Donald Duck’s sister is an astronaut.
  • Donald Duck is actually color blind. We know this because when he joined the army in Donald Gets Drafted, we see him presented a green card with “green” written on it as blue.
  • Donald has gone on to star in seven feature films — which is more than any of his Disney counterparts.

So when you now see this Disney star out and about, you’ll have some interesting facts to share with your family and friends.
